img_6097

Want to see how hard you can push yourself — and have fun doing it? Join us for our Co-Ed Super Challenge! Led by Adam Gil, one of Atlanta’s top fitness instructors, this intense 1.5-hour workout will challenge you mentally as well as physically.

Be prepared to sweat, get dirty, handle kettle bells, lift dumb bells, carry sandbags, push sleds, flip tires, go for a little ruck, and make a bunch of new friends while throwing up…ahh, I mean throwing down! … to some of the best music around (Adam, as it turns out, is also a very popular DJ, so the playlist is sure to be on point.)

All you need to bring is your H20, comfortable clothing you can sweat and get messy in, workout gloves if you’re afraid of a little dirt, your A-game and a positive, no-quit attitude, and you’re good to go!

Though this workout might bring you close to your breaking point, or past it, you’re sure to leave with a big ol’ smile and a “wow, I just kicked some butt” glow. See you there!

Trainer Spotlight: Jonathan Kolowich

Jonathan’s favorite exercise:  burpees

Why Jonathan loves burpees:

  • “Because not only will burpees turn you into an athlete, they’ll also scorch fat and get you conditioned.  Burpees involve agility, balance, coordination, and total body strength; and most importantly, they are just as mental as physical.  Mental toughness is key in everything in life!”

The craze for avocados has increased over the past few years. Not only are people discovering more and more recipes, but they are also discovering health remedies with avocados. Avocados can be used for numerous things, and almost never fail to make a snack or meal more tasty. Who doesn’t love guacamole, avocado and eggs or avocado toast? People even enjoy eating avocados by themselves these days!

Avocados surely are a delicious superfood, full of good fats and vitamins; so, why not dig down a little deeper into what exactly is so healthy and great about avocados?

Below are some fun facts about avocados (adapted from: www.popsugar.com):

  1. They’re high in “good fat.” Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats, which fight heart disease and can reduce potentially harmful cholesterol.
  2. Antioxidants are abundant in avocado. Avocados are full of antioxidants, which are believed to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  3. Avocados are chock-full of vitamins. Amounts of the vitamins in avocado can vary, but the fruit is full of important vitamins K, C, B5, B6, and E.
  4. They’ve got protein! Unlike many other fruits, an avocado actually contains protein. The amount of protein depends on the size of the fruit, but about 100 grams of avocado contains 2 grams of protein.
  5. You don’t have to eat avocado to reap benefits. OK, eating avocados is really good for you, but it’s also a great addition to your beauty routine.
  6. You can substitute avocado in place of more fattening oils or butter. The California Avocado Association details how avocado can be a healthier alternative to regular baking ingredients.
  7. It might be a nutrient booster. The growers’ group also suggests that avocado consumption could help the body absorb other nutrients from food; one study seems to support this idea.
  8. They’re good for pregnant women. Avocados contain folate, which is essential for growing babies.
  9. And don’t forget about the potassium. Avocados, like bananas, contain potassium, which is an important mineral to consume for a number of bodily functions and processes.

Client of the Month

Jordan Mussi

November 2013

Jordan Mussi, 30, a business owner originally from Brazil but now living in Marietta, is not a new name to the Brad Kolowich Jr Personal Training Studio client of the month list! Jordan has been training with Brad since December of 2012. In one years time he has NEVER missed or even rescheduled a personal training session. Jordan not only gives it everything he has in each training session, but he follows a prescribed training plan on his own as well as a strict mass gaining nutrition plan as recommended by Brad. This motivation, commitment to and trust in the plan created for him, has helped Jordan reach his ultimate goal this month. Almost one year ago, Jordan came to Brad at 149 pounds, looking to gain 30 pounds of lean muscle mass. This month he reached his goal, weighing in at 181.8 pounds. Gaining mass while maintaining a lean physique takes rigorous adherence to a weight lifting and nutrition plan, but most importantly it takes trust and patience in the plan your trainer has prepared for you. Thank you Jordan for being an example to Brad Kolowich Jr Personal Training Studio of what you can achieve if you set your mind to it and work at it daily. Your determination, motivation, and success is an inspiration to us all.  Keep up the hard work and we look forward to seeing you continue to set and reach new goals!

A little over a year ago, Brad Kolowich Jr personal training studio began a new tradition to help encourage, motivate and reward client adherence to reaching their fitness goals. Each month, as a team, our personal trainers review client progress, motivation, determination, commitment in order to pick the Client of the Month. As Brad says, “This is not Kindergarten. The person who receives this status has truly earned it and it can be achieved multiple times.” In July 2012, Jamie Harrison became our first ever client of the month. That summer he lost almost 30 pounds. Jamie attends the University of Georgia and throughout the course of his school year he kept in touch with Brad and maintained a strict workout schedule and followed a diet designed for leaning out. This month, August 2013 he becomes the first client ever to receive this status twice! When he returned home from school in June of 2013, Jamie has lost an additional 8 pounds. Beginning in June he worked with Brad on yet another new leaning out lifting program and low-carb/high-protein diet with one high-carb day. In just eight weeks Jamie lost another 32 pounds, while gaining strength and maintaining lean muscle mass. In just one short year, Jamie’s total weight loss was almost 70 pounds. Since beginning training with Brad in 2012 he has lost a total of 11.5 inches in his waist!! Jamie, thank you for your commitment and motivation towards reaching your fitness goals! You are a true inspiration to others and example of what anyone can achieve with determination and trust in the programs designed to help you reach your goals!

Supplement Review:  Make BETA-ALANINE a part of your supplement arsenal.

Here’s why:

Although you get this amino acid through small amounts in meats, it’s not enough to maximize your gains in the gym. Supplementing with 1.5-3 gram in both your pre and post workout drink will ensure that you maximize your strength and power output, increase your muscular endurance, train at a greater intensity, as well as boost your intra-muscular carnosine levels (precursor to nitric oxide (NO) production = greater pump and vascularity).

Many pre-workout powders on the market already include beta-alanine in the mix so no need to add in this case although you may consider adding to your post-workout shake as well. Most reputable supplement companies sell beta-alanine, although I’ve been happy with Allmax Nutrition’s product.

As a personal trainer, I get lots of questions in regards to supplementation.  One supplement that I’m asked about fairly frequently is creatine. Creatine is without a doubt one of the, if not the most effective natural supplement in supporting lean muscle mass gains, strength and power increases, and greater endurance in the gym or cardio activities. While there are various forms of creatine out there, the one that I’ve found to be effective without the side effects is creatine HCL.

Creatine HCL is superior to creatine monohydrate for multiple reasons including:

No bloating, no cramping, no excess water retention outside the muscle cells (subcutaneous water buildup making you look “soft”), no necessary loading phase, and no cycling necessary.  Creatine HCL also allows for a much lower dose amount in addition to a 60% greater absorption rate than monohydrate.

Although Promera was the first to launch the HCL form, multiple other companies have released this variation of creatine as well.

anti-aging Brad Kolowich Jr Personal Training

As Certified Fitness Professionals, keeping up with our education is probably the single most important aspect of ensuring success in our business and providing the best care possible for our clients. As personal trainers, our clients and their families entrust the care of their bodies and lives to us, and turn to us with questions and advice. In order to provide our clientele with accurate and current information our trainers are always continuing their education to enhance their certifications, knowledge and expertise in the health, wellness and fitness industry.

In March of 2013, Brad Kolowich Jr earned his Longevity Wellness Specialist Certification through the American Council of Exercise. Through this course Brad studied the biological processes involved in aging, the ten key body systems where decline first begins, and the culprits largely responsible for tripping the time clock. He also has extensively studied the benefits of hormone therapy and how to naturally stimulate you hormone production, replenish your nutrient stores, strengthen your immune system, nourish your body, burn fat and build lean muscle and revitalize in your sleep, combat skin aging, and maintain a youthful mind and spirit. It is stated that at the completion of this study, Brad now has more knowledge about the science of anti-aging medicine than most doctors on the planet. Brad has already began to help shift the lines of aging in himself and many clients at Brad Kolowich Jr Personal Training Studio. We look forward to continuing to learn and be motivated through Brad’s knowledge and desire to inspire others to live a long life, stop the clock and reverse the signs of aging! Congratulation Brad!
